- Where you see the water: which room, and whether it is a stain, a drip or a wet spot
- When it shows up: every rain, only heavy or wind-driven rain, or after snow
- What sits on the roof above it: a chimney, a skylight, a vent pipe or a flat section
- Photos of the ceiling and, if you can safely take them from the ground, of the roof
