Ice dams and winter roof leaks in St. Louis
When snow melts on a warm afternoon and freezes again at the roof edge, it can build an ice dam. Water backs up behind the ice, gets under the shingles, and shows up as a ceiling stain or a wet wall. Usually the cause is heat escaping into the attic, not a bad roof.

Before winter: a quick checklist
- Clean gutters and downspouts so meltwater can drain.
- Look for lifted flashing at chimneys, walls and skylights.
- Check rubber pipe boots for cracks.
- Look for missing or curled shingles at the eaves and in valleys.
- Check the attic for frost or damp insulation on a cold morning.
Repair first
Most winter leaks come from one spot: a boot, a piece of flashing, a few shingles. We find that spot, photograph it, and fix it. If it can be repaired, we say so. If the roof is fine, we say that too.
If water is coming in now
Repair It offers 24/7 emergency roof repair and tarping. Don't climb an icy roof or chip at the ice. Keep the water contained and let us look.
FAQ
- Will a repair hold through winter?
- Many repairs can be done on mild days. If yours needs warmer weather to seal, we'll tell you and protect it until then.
- Do you fix gutters?
- Yes. We do gutter repairs and leaf covers, which help meltwater drain.
